CNG STATION SETUP & SAFETY

TRILLIUM'S APPROACH TO CNG STATION SETUP & SAFETY

Trillium’s engineers design energy- and cost-efficient fueling solutions based on our customers’ needs. Our team starts by documenting the customer’s daily operating profile including vehicle use, fuel consumption and fleet requirements. This analysis will provide near- and long-term objectives to ensure that the station will meet their needs today and in the future.

We provide our customers with an overview of projected capital and operating expenditures, deployment timelines, annual fuel cost savings and total emission reductions so they can make fully informed decisions.

We manage discussions with the local utilities regarding any infrastructure upgrades, and coordinate with permitting authorities to secure all required site permits.

COMMON CNG STATION COMPONENTS

  •
    Gas Meter

The local gas utility supplies a meter set assembly (MSA) to regulate and measure the amount of gas being used. It is important to work closely with the utility to determine the pressures and flow rates that are available at each site, and to determine if any service upgrades will be needed.

  •
    Dryer

Inlet gas with high moisture content will require “drying” in order to make it suitable for fueling vehicles. The dryer removes residual water vapor with desiccants that are regenerated for reuse.

  •
    Compressor

Compressors are the workhorses of the CNG station and must withstand the rigors of heavy-duty daily use over many years. Trillium utilizes CNG compressors with an unmatched record of service, long life and superior factory support.

  •
    Storage Vessels

Compressors keep on-site storage vessels full allowing for short fill times which are usually between 3-5 minutes, depending on the amount of storage at a station and the requirements of the vehicle.

  •
    CNG Fuel Dispenser

CNG can be dispensed through a fast-fill or time-fill system. Fast fill systems provide fill times similar to gasoline and diesel fuel dispensing, and often include fuel management and credit card systems for payment. Time fill dispensers may take hours to provide a “full” fill.

  •
    Breakaway Devices

Trillium employs various hose and dispenser features to ensure safety while fueling. Breakaway devices at each dispenser hose will cut off the gas supply if a customer were to drive off with a hose still attached. Gas flow will also be interrupted if the dispenser is damaged through impact.

  •
    Smart Controls

Trillium’s proprietary and proven smart controls optimize fueling, balance equipment loads and minimize the number of compressor starts to decrease wear on equipment.

  •
    Emergency Shutdown

System controls monitor equipment performance and automatically shut down a station in the event of unsafe fueling conditions. If needed, Emergency Shutdown (ESD) buttons are located in several places on-site and will cause a station to shut down entirely when pushed.

Footprint Size

The footprint size of the CNG station is dependent on many factors including the number and size of vehicles using the station, traffic flow, the fueling times required, set back requirements from other facilities and property lines, security considerations, impact protection and the need for maintenance access.

Set Back Distances

Set back distances are regulated by codes, primarily National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Code 52. Set back distances are required from public rights of way, electrical installations, sources of ignition and traffic flow.

SAFETY & RELIABILITY ARE TRILLIUM'S TOP PRIORITIES

That’s why we design and build our CNG stations to provide uninterrupted heavy-duty fueling and conduct rigorous performance tests to ensure they meet our high-quality standards. Trillium implements a strict maintenance schedule for every station component, maximizing uptime and reliability. Our 100+ staff technicians are certified by all major component suppliers and engage in continuing education.

Trillium’s 24/7 service team is comprised of highly trained staff members that visually monitor equipment, answer incoming calls, respond immediately to faults and work with our local service teams to diagnose and repair issues. For critical service calls (e.g., impaired fueling, safety concerns), our local teams respond on-site within two hours or less.
